Heliocentric Planetary Nodes
The following is from Carl Payne Tobey: It becomes vital to know the zodiacal position of the planetary nodes. The position of the north lunar node is given in the ephemeris. The south lunar node will be at the opposite zodiacal point. The Sun is not involved in this calculation, because the Moon goes around the earth. The point where the two orbits cross is itself in motion, and it circumvents the entire circle of the zodiac in 19 years.
The planetary nodes have a similar motion, but it is too slow to be significant within a lifetime. The nodes of Mercury circle the zodiac once in something over 171,000 years, while the nodes of Uranus make the trip in about 40,000 years. Oddly, the nodes of some of the outer planets appear to move more rapidly than those of the inner planets. In any event, however, no planetary node moves a degree within 100 years, so you can use the present nodal positions as close enough for any living being. Present north nodal positions are as follows:
MERCURY 17 TAURUS
VENUS 16 GEMINI
MARS 19 TAURUS
JUPITER 9 CANCER
SATURN 23 CANCER
URANUS 13 GEMINI
NEPTUNE 11 LEO
PLUTO 19 CANCER
Planets aspecting these points, or even the lunar nodes aspecting these points, have significance. To have a body conjunct or square the node of a planet appears to be more important than to have it conjunct the planet itself. The node of Mars will show up strongly where violence and surgery is involved. In fact, we have found but one case of a hysterectomy to date where the woman did not have a planet (any planet) conjunct or square to Mars' nodes That one case had Mars conjunct the node of Saturn. During a class, a protest against this statement was introduced by the wife of a physician. As a result, all the students were requested to accumulate all the cases of hysterectomies they could find, and try and locate a case where this was not true. Many birth dates involving hyster- ectomies were produced. There was no case among them where some natal planet was not conjunct or square the nodes of Mars. That does not mean there are no such cases, and you might find one, but when you do, please send it to us. In fact, it will be very helpful to our research department if you will send in the birth dates of all the people you know who have found hysterectomies necessary. The data will be very welcome.
Planets conjunct or square the nodes of Saturn have a depressive correspondence, while planets conjunct or square the nodes of Uranus have a very restless and rebellious spirit. The functioning seems to be similar to aspects of the planets themselves but more pronounced.
The north node of a planet is also called the ascending node, while the south node is called the descending node. No one has yet prepared symbols for the planetary nodes, and if we invented symbols and placed them in each horoscope, the charts would become rather crowded, but you can compare them with each chart you draw. You don't have to worry or be concerned about their motion, except for the lunar nodes which are given in your ephemeris. Another experience was important in our dropping any conception of astrology as a causal phenomenon. The ancients placed great emphasis on the occurrence of mportant events at the time of an eclipse of the Sun or Moon, and having observed many world shaking events that occurred near the time of an eclipse, we set out to investigate this statistically. We found many events that occurred near the time of an eclipse, but we also found many important events that occurred at other times. Eclipses can occur only when the Sun is conjunct or within about 15 degrees of a lunar node.
Our statistical investigations showed that most of the important world events which occurred when there was no eclipse took place when the Sun was square the lunar nodes. Thus, it would appear to have nothing to do with the eclipses, because there can be no eclipse when the Sun is squre the lunar nodes, but the results are the same.
Statistics also show that loss-of-life through fire increases when the Sun or Uranus is conjunct or square the lunar nodes. Yet, there is no increase in the number of fires during these periods. Our investigation included all the fires in the U.S. and Canada where the material loss was over $100,000, over an eight year period. The data were furnjshed by the National Fire Protection Association which publishes all such data for insurance companies. Nearly all the "famous" fires took place when the Sun or Uranus was conjunct or square the lunar nodes, but "famous" fires are those where loss-of-life is heavy.
It is our considered view that what is here involved is human instability. Human instability reaches its maximum when the Sun and lunar nodes are 0 and 90 degrees apart, its minimum when they are 45 or 135 degrees apart. At the maximum, people panic more easily. A very great ratio of loss-of-life through fire takes place during the night among people who are sleeping in strange surroundings as in a hotel. If they awaken in strange surroundings during an unstable period to find the building on fire, they seem to know what to do. They think clearly. But if the same thing happens during an unstable period, they are confused and they panic bringmg about their own deaths. Hotel fires which occurred during stable periods have seldom involved loss-of-life, but hotel fires occurring during the unstable intervals have resulted in very heavy loss-of-life.
From Philip Sedgwick's SUN AT THE CENTER: Planetary Nodes
The planetary nodes stimulate an area of influence in the heliocentric horoscope. Early work by John Nelson found that a planet was stronger when within five to ten degrees of either node or bisection of the nodal axis. He was not clear as to whether a planet interacted strongly only with its own nodes. It is submitted that any planet to any other planetary node may be considered
to be an effective aspect - five degree orb maximum.
Planetary nodes in heliocentric astrology advance at a rate of about one degree per 100 years.
This does not represent an effect of precession since precession is a geocentric perceptual phenomenon. The slow motion of the nodes creates a generational influence in which virtually any person born in any given century has the same nodes. What could be the fuss?
The planet in contact to the node represents the personalized connection to a collective issue.
The planet reveals the impetus that the individual possesses to exert an effect in a larger issue of humanity and in context of the planet's symbolism. North Node connections induce the individual to push for advance, change, reform and progress - worst case: rebellion, malcontent and antiestablishment attitudes prevail, often polarizing the opposed force into greater manifestation; protest and resistance fail to function at any level. South planetary nodes contain
heritage, tradition and foundation. Contacts to the south node support such historical bases with great chauvinism. Other times, the tailing node contact represents dogma, resistance to progress, fear of advancement and the inability to adjust to technological progress. A point of equilibrium and balance must be maintained.
It remains relatively simple to delineate planetary contacts to nodes. Do realize that examples presented are out of horoscopic context and could be modified significantly by other aspects in the chart.
Consider the instance of an individua's Mercury in Gemini con joining the Venusian North Node. A double Gemini influence prevails from Mercury and its association to Gemini and the sign of the North Node of Venus. This inspires the individual to speak actively regarding social issues, monetary conditions, or the sphere of social relationships. Best case, this person effectively occupies a platform for social and economic reform. Worst case, the individual reduces the self into the realm of idle gossip - misdirected, unapplied, frustrated by the collective conditions at hand. His/her overall morality would feel violated without source to rectification.
Should an individual's natal Mars in Capricorn fall upon the Saturnian South Node, the individual would be an archeologist. This archeology need not manifest in the physical lets-godig-a-hole-in Egypt mode. The digging into the past could be mental, philosophical or emotional.
This individual strives to extract the value and benefit of what was done, noting the downfalls in the interest of avoiding future tautology. At best, the person advances great insights into dimensions of development and realizes a variety of ways to transcend past errors. When operating at a less than optimum level, the owner of the map becomes obsessed by tradition, allowing an antiquated heritage to go unchallenged by the motions of progress. Such action merely seals the fate of the collective force to replicate old procedures enabling accurate recycling of the same efforts at evolution - ultimate redundancy.
Nelson's work pointed out sensitivity of a planet bisecting the nodal axis - the midpoint of the North Node/South Node or South Node/North Node. A moderately different flavor may be applied to each of these nodal midpoints. The direction of the natural zodiac constitutes the from/to direction, these points follow a from/to format, that is, from South Node to North Node or from North Node to South Node.
The motion in the direction of the North Node from the South Node shows a movement out of the past and into the future. Integration, balance and synthesis of the two worlds of existence becomes paramount. Taking the best of the old and applying it as foundation provides a key as to this necessary integration. Elimination of old for mats which exceed effective application propels the issue forward even further. A moderate approach to progress blending with the firmness of tested effort combines for a successful approach to a planet's theme.
Moving from the North Node to the South Node requires more emphasis to be placed on exploration of the past. Previous forms hold many keys to ensure that progressive effects do not fall short of the goal through lack of preparation or expectation of the unforeseen. This nodal moderation calls for a conservative attitude in growth and progress. Examination of the former reveals potential problematic situations. Such avoidances, perceived in advance due to retrospective analysis, save great time and energy in the interest of forward motion and growth.
more about the Heliocentric Planetary Nodes from Philip Sedgwick's SUN AT THE CENTER:
The planetary north node suggests an approach to the present life circumstances which enables the individual to glean the most from subsequent actions in reflexive motion. The individual must clearly pursue the north node to avoid repetition of past patterns and to ensure that the natal energy of the associated planet be fulfilled. The north node of a planet resembles a beam of laser light, straight and direct, which the individual may use to fine-tune directional guidance.
The south node of a planet represents a causation of the planetary energy of past time frames.
It is important to isolate the south planetary node from the types of innuendos often tied to the lunar south node in geocentric astrology. First, the karmic implication of a planetary south node does not have to maintain any relevance to past incarnations lived upon the Earth. Such suggestions should be discouraged. Secondly, past in terms of time may be confusing. Past means five seconds ago, not necessarily some great life time in Atlantis or Egypt. Past is measured in the soul's evolution whether in an incarnation or not. The considerations of time's relationship to space advanced by Albert Einstein and contemporaries suggest that the past is now. Regardless, with respect to the heliocentric south node of any planet, past connotes something done or completed. Experiences still in progress align the individual with the dharma of the north planetary node.
